ARK, an original contemporary ballet featuring local African drummer Jimmy Schultz and Detroit vocalist Kenny Watson debuts March 8 & 9, 2014 at The DeVos Center for Arts and Worship at Grand Rapids Christian High School.  The HIS Ensemble production looks at the Biblical account of Noah's Ark, viewing it through the perspective of the animals.  The large scale ark, built by the Grand Rapids Community College Theatre Department, along with skilled lighting and costuming, help transform this beloved Bible story into a spectacular theatrical event.

The innovative choreography by artistic directors Tassia Hooks-Johnson and Hannah Sullivan take the audience on an emotional journey. “We tell a story that reflects the love God has for each of us.”  The animals were separated from their families, gathered in a strange place and told to board an unknown vessel. A great storm eradicated their world, destroying everything familiar and loved. But, God then revealed Himself in a remarkable way.

Tassia and Hannah teach dance at HIS Christian Dance Academy and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Tassia was a soloist with the acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem for twelve years and toured the world performing original works by many notable choreographers. Hannah performs with and choreographs for Dance In The Annex (DITA) and was a 2013 Art Prize Juror Award Nominee with DITA for their piece "Angle of Repose”. Their unique experiences combine to create a ballet with strong technique and creative choreography that all ages will enjoy. Kenny Watson’s unique vocals and message of love, make him a great addition to this production. A motor city native, Kenny has been a consistent headline performer on the Mike-E and Afroflow Tour. He is committed to helping youth find hope and promoting the efforts of the American Cancer Society.

HIS Christian Dance Academy, in its tenth year, offers classes in a variety of dance forms for children ages 3 through adult. Pre-professional training in ballet and recreational dance is taught in combination with developing Christian character and reaching the Grand Rapids community for Christ.
